About

Diversity & Inclusion

Diversity is in our DNA.

In 1950, Salesianum was the first school in Delaware to integrate by choice, reflecting our Salesian roots of inclusion and respect.

But that was only the beginning.

Today, we continue to hold diversity as a top priority in all parts of our community. We welcome young men of all different races, backgrounds, and religious beliefs — because a broader perspective here prepares them for lives of faith and service in a diverse world.

Unity + diversity = unidiversity

As a Catholic school, we believe every person has the dignity of being made in God’s image. So we foster a supportive community that embraces differences, promoting respect for every individual. Getting exposure to different ideas, experience, and cultures directly reflects our mission to Live Jesus.

That’s why diversity and inclusion are non-negotiable parts of our Catholic and Salesian identity. Our patron, Saint Francis de Sales, described his idea of “unidiversity” in “Treatise on the Love of God”:

“God, like a printer, has given existence to all the different creatures which have been, are, or shall be, by one single stroke of his all-powerful will… All [created things] together are called the universe, perhaps because all their diversity is reduced to unity, as if one were to say unidiverse, that is, unique and diverse, unique along with diversity and diversity along with unity.”

In that spirit of unity, Salesianum opens its doors wide — and aims to open young men’s minds.

Salesianum School educates and develops the whole person based on the teaching of Saint Francis de Sales, whose spirituality can be summarized in “Live Jesus.” As an independent Catholic secondary school founded by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales in 1903, Salesianum challenges young men through dynamic college preparatory and extracurricular programs to live as Salesian Gentlemen devoted to faith, community, and service.
