All five Salesianum winter sports programs have made history, completing an incredible 5 for 5 championship season. The Basketball title was Salesianum’s fourth of the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) winter season, joining Indoor Track, Swimming & Diving, and Wrestling in the first “sweep” of boys' winter sports in state history. Add these four trophies to the Philadelphia Catholic League title earned by our Ice Hockey team since there is no Delaware State Champion for Ice Hockey. 

Salesianum’s Indoor Track team continued its dominance with another State Championship on February 4th—their fourth in a row They battled in both running and field events, earning 98 points, a 40-point finish over the second-place team. Congratulations to the team, their families, and to Head Coach Tim Byrne and his staff for their leadership and continued excellence!

Salesianum’s swimming and diving team had a strong performance at the University of Delaware on February 25th, especially the seniors who notched a state championship in each of their four years at Salesianum. The team scored 343 points. It was a complete team effort, with 17 out of 19 swimmers qualifying for finals heats. And for Head Coach Chip Hannig ’72, check out this stat line: it was our seventh straight title under his leadership, our 17th title in the last 18 seasons, and incredibly, our 21st state title in his 23 years as head coach. Congratulations to Coach Chip Hannig '72, the team, and their families on another championship performance.

The #4 seed Salesianum wrestling team avenged regular season losses by taking down #1 Sussex Central in the semifinals and #2 Cape Henlopen in the finals. It was our first wrestling title since 1984, the first Division I championship by a team “north of the canal” since 2010, the first time Salesianum has won the Duals championship since they changed the format of the tournament, and the first #4 seed to win in the history of the state tournament. Congratulations to this hard-working group of young men and Coach Cameron Davis and his staff. 

Salesianum Ice Hockey completed an undefeated season in the Philadelphia Catholic League with a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against Father Judge in the championship game on Wednesday, March 1st. A phenomenal team effort was led by sophomore Nick LaBuono, who scored the tying goal with 32 seconds remaining to stun the Crusaders and followed with the game-winner six minutes into overtime. Congratulations to Head Coach Brian LeBlanc, the Hockey team, and their families. Next up is the Flyers Cup!

Salesianum’s basketball team defeated William Penn 48-44 in front of a sellout crowd at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware on Saturday, March 11th. This is the first state title for Coach Trevisan '09. Congratulations to the team and their families, Coach Taylor Trevisan ’09, and his staff on earning our third basketball championship.
