Lt. Joseph Szczerba Memorial 5K Honors Fallen Hero's Legacy
Runners, walkers, and supporters from across New Castle County gather each spring at Salesianum School to participate in the Annual Lt. Joseph Szczerba Memorial 5K, an event that honors the life of a true Salesian Gentleman and community hero. The race began as a tribute to Lieutenant Joseph Szczerba ’85, an 18-year veteran of the New Castle County Police Department and a 1985 graduate of Salesianum School, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on September 16, 2011. In his memory, Kathy, Joe's widow, established the Szczerba Memorial Scholarship, supporting the education of children of First Responders. All proceeds from the event go towards the scholarship fund.

The cause is especially important to Dan Kegelman, who said, “Joe was a humble and respectful man who truly embodied the spirit of a Salesian Gentleman. After his death, Joe’s wife Kathy wanted to find a way to honor Joe’s legacy and give back to Salesianum – a place that Joe truly loved.”

Participants of all ages and fitness levels come together not only to run or walk in remembrance of Joe but also to celebrate the sense of community and camaraderie that defines this annual gathering. Children can also participate in the Kiddie Run, while non-runners and walkers can enjoy the festive atmosphere and show their support for the cause. Following the race, attendees can enjoy a lively after-party featuring live music, delectable food, and refreshing beverages, fostering an environment of unity and celebration.

Through our community efforts each year, we help ensure that Joe's legacy remains alive and continues to inspire acts of kindness and generosity that resonate far beyond the finish line. Thank you to everyone who supports the event!
