Coach Tim Byrne Receives the USTFCCCA Track & Field State Coach of the Year for the Fourth Time

Congratulations to Track and Field Head Coach Tim Byrne, named the 2023 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) High School Boys Track and Field State Coach of the Year. He received the state award three other times in 2019, 2021, and 2022 along with the national honor in 2022, the first coach in Delaware to receive it.

This recognition is a testament to Coach Byrne's exceptional leadership and the track & field team's incredible success, who have won the State Championship consecutively since 2020. He has said that his success has “just being a complete team from top to bottom really is the formula, the formula for success that we’ve had.” Tim has been coaching at Salesianum since 2016, with head coaching duties starting in the winter of 2018. He is also a Freshmen Football Coach and Educational Support teacher at Salesianum.

The USTFCCCA High School Coach of the Year Award Program, sponsored by the United States Marine Corps, has celebrated the best high school boys' and girls' cross country and track & field coaches since 2014. This program highlights coaches' tremendous impact on their athletes and recognizes their invaluable contributions to the sport. State-by-state winners are selected by a committee of experts from around the nation based on their teams’ performances throughout the outdoor track & field season. Among the factors taken into consideration were team score and placement at the state championships, margin of victory, performance against rankings if available, individual championships, and how their teams’ performances stacked up to previous years (e.g., first title in school history, consecutive titles, etc.). A boys' and girls' coach from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia are chosen at the end of each respective season as state-by-state winners - from there, those 102 honorees are vetted, and two national award winners are selected.
