Mr. Brendan P. Kennealey ’94

On April 11, 2011, the Very Rev. James Greenfield, OSFS, provincial of the Wilmington/Philadelphia Province of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, and chairman of the Board of Trustees at Salesianum School, appointed Mr. Brendan P. Kennealey ’94 president of Salesianum School. The appointment was made after an extensive search and following recommendations from Salesianum’s Board of Trustees.  Mr. Kennealey is the first lay person and second graduate to serve as president of Salesianum.

Prior to joining Salesianum, Mr. Kennealey held the position of Area Superintendent in the Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Schools Office, where he worked with over 40 Catholic primary and secondary schools on strategic initiatives including faith formation, academic excellence and financial viability.  Kennealey also served as an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Management at Boston College, where he taught social entrepreneurship.

Mr. Kennealey has founded two non-profit organizations dedicated to the education and well-being of youth in the country of Rwanda: the Benebikira Sisters Foundation (BSF) and Mission Schools International (MSI). BSF raises awareness and funding for the Benebikira Sisters' schools and health clinics, which helped rebuild Rwanda after the 1994 genocide. As Chairman of the BSF board, Mr. Kennealey helped to generate over $400,000 of support. In 2007, he founded MSI, which worked closely with the Rwandan government to develop a comprehensive model of education, as well as the Rwandan national curriculum for entrepreneurship.

In 2003, Mr. Kennealey collaborated with the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales to found Nativity Preparatory School in Wilmington, DE. The school is part of a nation-wide network of tuition-free middle schools serving students from low-income families. Mr. Kennealey’s experience with Nativity schools dates to 2000, when he served as founding principal of Nativity Preparatory School in New Bedford, MA. At the time, he was the youngest principal in the 30-year history of the Nativity-model schools in the United States.

A native of Wilmington and graduate of Immaculate Heart of Mary and Salesianum, Mr. Kennealey holds a B.A. from Boston College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is the 2008 recipient of the Graduate of the Last Decade Award from Boston College, and the 2006 recipient of the Harvard Business School Student Service Award.
