Students Win Computer Programming Contest for Second Straight Year

Salesianum School students Kevin Touhey ‘09 and Louis Sgalsky ’09 won first place at the Rowan University Programming Contest for the second consecutive year. According to contest officials, this is the first time a school has repeated as champion.

This year the contest involved writing an application to determine the layout of windows on a computer screen. The problem designers sought to create a problem that appears easy but is quite complex. Students had to take into account the many and varied ways windows could be arranged on the screen, including overlapping each other and being completely off the screen.

Kevin and Louis competed against 25 other schools from Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They were the only team to come up with a solution that correctly solved the problem in all cases.

"Salesianum prepared me well for the competition," said Touhey, "it's fun to be able to take what we've learned in class and use it outside the classroom."

Both students are in Salesianum's advanced computer programming class, and both plan on studying Computer Science next year in college.

Salesianum School is a Roman Catholic independent secondary school that teaches young men to Live Jesus, guided by the spirituality of Saint Francis de Sales, through a college preparatory education, enabling them to take their place in the world as Salesian gentlemen.
